The first three segments will be 20 laps each leading into the famous 10-lap shootout for all the money at the end. The final segment will only feature 10 racers with the winners of the first three segments (if they are still on the lead lap) and the drivers who post the highest average finish in them as the only ones who will advance while everyone else is sent to the hauler early. 11. The race will be divided into three segments with each of those winners advancing. Everyone else will be eliminated but one driver will get a hangman's reprieve by being voted into the race by the fans. 12. 1995z71 posted: 05.20.2017 - 6:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Stupid moves by both Danica Patrick and Chase Elliot. 13. Remove the splitter, side skirts, bring back ride height to 4-5 inches, increase the spoiler to 5 inches, even add the roof wicker to create drag and allow cars to catch up. The field in 20 laps was almost a lap down. That's a scary thought on how these cars really race each other. They could also make the all star race on the road course, or go to a short track. Martinsville under the lights or even Bowman-Gray stadium would be 100% better. I feel bad for these fans that went to the race. Over hyped. 47. (At least you can convert a spare from a gutter ball.) The option tire idea might have sounded like a good idea, but the fact remains that unless they can get it so the cars can race much closer together, the racing is never going to get better, no matter what else they try. And 20-lap segments are simply too short. Now I'm not advocating going back to what they did from 1987-'89 (which was segments of 75 and 50 laps, with a 10-lap finale), but a great idea would be to bring back the All-Star Race's best and most popular format, something that grew from the two worst runnings of the All-Star Race (VI and VII), and that would be having two 30-lap segments, with the field inverted for the second 30-lap segment, followed by the 10-lap shootout at the end with the optional pit stops they had from about '98 or '99 through to when they did away with the 30-30 with inversion-10 format, because the leaders in this race never really had to deal with traffic at any time. By inverting the field, at least the drivers and teams who could move up through the field during that second 30-lap segment were able to show how strong their cars were. (And why not make the Open a straight-up 50 lap race, instead of running short segments that require good overall set-ups, and have the requisite number of top finishers that are needed to fill a 20-car field advance.) Another problem all day/night long was the fact that there wasn't a workable second groove. One of the great things about Charlotte Motor Speedway over the years has been that there's always been more than one workable groove, but not in this race. The track for the 33rd All-Star Race was, in effect, a one-groove track, and nobody could really make any significant moves. If you were in the back, the best you could do was to get to the middle of the pack, and if you were in the middle of the pack, the best you could do was stay there. The fact that it was a one-groove track, combined with the fact that the segments were too short, resulted in drivers, for the most part, being stuck where they were. 50. Only Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick have won all 5 prestigue races, the title and all 3 exhibitions. This is also first Kyle's Cup win at Charlotte - in a non-point race, but win is a win. And Kyle becomes the first driver to sweep the first of two Charlotte weekends, because he also won the Truck race. Pretty unusual sweep, but no other race will be run this weekend. 56. That second Las Vegas Cup race could help, because I really don't think they'll keep the Truck date in one weekend and the Cup race in other weekend in the same time of a year. But if it's a part of the Chase in Trucks, Kyle can't start there. "Also even though he won the 2008 Darlington race, that "wasn't" the Southern 500. He has yet to win that." True. But the same for Aaron's 499, which was the Winston 500. I don't think there's a reason to be so strict just because the sponsors didn't name the race Southern 500 that year and 3 previous years. 71. Interesting that NASCAR doesn't have a single article about it. But hey, it's not even a point race, just an exhibition. I don't think it matters that much in this case. He still had to pass Keselowski and hold everyone off. Do they have a proper inspections even after the All Star race? I've been watching NASCAR for 10 years, but never thought about it. In that case, Las Vegas weekend can have a tripleheader. And if he won there, he would add Las Vegas to the list of wins at the same tracks in each series and, like you mentioned, would win literally at all Cup tracks in that series. He basically has this now, because Las Vegas race is unaccessible and isn't a part of the Las Vegas weekend early in the season. It's the same like having wins at all tracks in the schedule and suddenly, there's a new track added to the schedule. 74. Yes. It's not his fault the second Darlington race was cancelled and so was the name Southern 500. But at least they returned the name Southern 500 in 2009. It's not all about the money... Actually, even $1,000,000 dollars are just a pocket money for those drivers. Their average earnings from the whole season are around $7,000,000 dollars in case of better drivers like Kyle, Brad, Joey or Jimmie. Having $1,000,000 dollars may be cool, but most of it will be just added to JGR budget like a nice bonus. It's not like a miracle JGR or any other team could suddenly afford much better equipment with it... And not to mention drivers' income from their sponsors - people like Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick and others are really somewhere else as far as money is concerned. And by the way - according to one post on Reddit, NASCAR said all cars successfully passed the post-race inspection (so there really is one) and no car will go to R&D center. So that's it, I guess. 78. Corey posted: 05.21.2017 - 2:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I thought they allowed for 1 missing lug. You were breaking the rules if you were missing two. 79. I get it's the "Season Opener" but at least he's NEVER won at Daytona at the Cup level. I just want Kyle to win at Charlotte (500 or 600) and Pocono, then he's had a hell of a resume. That would mean a lot. Pocono can wait (as long as they don't suddenly decide to cancel that race in the future), because Watkins Glen is much bigger pain in the ass. The greenback-themed look tied in with a contest Busch Beer had where if Happy won the race they would pay a fan $1 million to match the winner's purse. Harvick only finished sixth so the money wasn't paid out. 88. The regular tires maintained the standard yellow coloring while the special option tires were given green logos instead. After racing into this one from the Open Clint Bowyer and his crew chief Mike Bugarewicz pulled a really clever strategy move in this one. NASCAR required all four of the green option tires to go on the car at once but there was no rule they all had to come off at once leading Bugarewicz to decide before this race weekend even started if his team made the All-Star race they would try running a half and half set up if possible as an experiment. The opportunity indeed arose, the #14 used their option tires for the second segment then made just a two-tire stop before the start of the third, leaving the green options on the left while having new regular yellow tires on the right. The move ultimately proved to be a bad one, Bowyer slide back out of contention fast and failed to advance to the final segment, but credit where credit is due for finding an interesting loophole. Frank Stoddard would be proud. 89. Spen posted: 05.23.2017 - 12:46 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) Mike Joy said it best at the end: "The All-Star race never fails to disappoint". Last night (5/24), they had the election of the ninth class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and while I'm glad to see Robert Yates get in, as he is a champion in every way possible, I'm equally appalled at the fact that TWO guys got in with 40% or LESS of the vote, and another got in with not much more than half the vote. (Yates was not one of them, because his was a near-unanimous vote.) This is supposed to be the Hall of FAME, the highest honor anyone can get in their chosen sport, and yet we're seeing guys get in with vote percentages in the 40s and now one even got in with a vote percentage in the high 30s. To me, this is absolutely inexcusable. For a guy to be elected into the Hall of Fame, one should have to get 60% to two-thirds vote, minimum. If someone can't get even half the vote, and more voters vote against him than for him, it means they're simply not worthy of the honor of being a Hall of Famer. It's as simple as that. And if that means that only one or two guys get in during a particular year, then so be it. 93. nascarman posted: 05.25.2017 - 7:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This isnt baseball or football or any other hall of fame. It's not like people are constantly becoming eligible and the panel decides whether they are hall of fame worthy. Everyone nominated for the NASCAR is hall of fame worthy and they will all get in eventually. The panel just decides when they get in. It's not that only 37% of voters think Hornaday is hall of fame worthy, 37% think he should get in this year, there's a difference. NASCARs hall of fame voting isnt about deciding whether they should get in but rather when they should. Its a bad way of inducting people and a flaw that comes with the HOF being 7 years old. 94. cjs3872 posted: 05.25.2017 - 8:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And that means that it should be an even higher bar, nascarman (#93). When the Pro Football Hall of fame was established in 1963, they inducted 25 men that year. Since then, they've always inducted between 4 and 7 (occasionally 8) each year, but it's almost always been a high bar. What they should do is to make it so that it's a 60% to two-thirds minimum for election and induction. Once someone's been on the main ballot for ex-number of years (probably 15), then they go into a special veteran's committee. Since the NASCAR Hall of Fame won't reach this point for another six years, that isn't something that needs to be pondered right now. Perhaps what they should do is to have two rounds of voting on the day of the election to the Hall of Fame, and then elect those that go in on the second go-round. The first round of voting would set the final ten nominees (plus any ties), and then on the second ballot, elect those from the final ten nominees that make it to the second ballot. That would guarantee that those elected would get a higher percentage of the votes, simply because there wouldn't be as many to choose from. I guarantee then you wouldn't see guys going in with voting percentages in the high 30s and low 40s, if they remain steadfast on putting five in from the main ballot each year, which I believe is the real source of this problem. Once the pool of finalists for the Hall of Fame is limited to ten after the first vote, that's when you put that 60% to two-thirds minimum vote for enshrinement. And another reason these vote totals are so low is the fact that the writers only get to choose five guys out of 20 (25%). If they could choose up to 8-10 of the 20, you'll also see higher vote totals for the enshrinees, because more of the voters would get to choose more worthy candidates. 95. nascarman posted: 05.25.2017 - 9:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think they should've inducted 25 in the first year like football did because now they're creating problems for themselves with the 5 every year. I totally agree with you that the five quota is problematic. Like you said, it should be percentage wise. Why require five when some are obvious picks and some are boarderline? 96. Eric posted: 05.25.2017 - 9:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) CJS3872, There is something to consider. The NASCAR hall of fame doesn't have all the best Qualified candidates on the ballot due to NASCAR holding personal grudges or not being on the ballot for some reason. A good example of this was when a NASCAR Hall of Fame ballot had 25 people including Anne B France ("Big" Bill France's Wife)instead of Smokey Yunick, Ralph Moody, or John Holman. Case in point is Smokey Yunick should've been on the ballot years ago, but isn't due to the bad blood between him and the France Family. There is similar stuff to why Ralph Moody and John Holman isn't on the ballot. What I am referring to is them abrupt closing up/scaling down in 1972, leaving NASCAR high and dry for a supply of cars and parts. Bill France Sr. wasn't happy about that and is possible that France family doesn't want those two be on the ballot as a result. Randy Dorton isn't the ballot yet, and it doesn't make sense considering how many championships and races his engines won for Hendrick Motorsports on different levels for NASCAR. 97. The voters seem them to get cocky with it resulting in years with no inductions at all, a veteran's committee that really doesn't care about ever voting to induct anyone, and plenty of talented players left out in the cold (Alan Trammel got screwed and now he'll never be in the hall). 98. most1305 posted: 05.26.2017 - 7:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I got a Hall of Fame chuckle when people debated earlier in the year of Carl Edwards or Kurt Busch were worthy. I mean, they put so many people in, with no hope of crew members making it (meaning like tire changers, etc) with the exception of maybe Chocolate Myers. Guys like Randy Lajoie and Larry Pearson will be in soon and then guys like Ward Burton will as well because there are only so many people. It's not much of a HOF if everyone eventually gets in! 99. Once he got into the main event Elliott turned in a solid run as he brought the #24 Mountain Dew Chevrolet home with a seventh-place finish. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. squeaks his way into his first All-Star race, scoring his first career win just two races earlier at Talladega to qualify for this event. Unfortunately his night would end when he and his #17 Fastenal Ford were eliminated before the start of the final segment. Fellow Xfinity Series champion Daniel Suarez also makes his all-star debut after having won the Open earlier in the night but he too failed to advance past the elimination. 101.
