Instead it moves to Bristol, being held on a short track for the first time ever, for a midweek race so that it could have some fans present for the event. This race will also feature all of the scheduled racers running with underglow lighting setup on the bottom of their cars to give the race a unique appearance. The "Choose Cone" where driers get to pick their lanes for each restart, ala local level short track racing, will also make its NASCAR Cup debut in this event as an experiment. 2. After the win he was thrilled he'd get to be in the main event. 3. NASCAR asked teams to run with their numbers placed further back on the side of the cars, just in front of the rear wheels, to open up more of the door for sponsor graphics. 4. Canadianfan posted: 07.13.2020 - 1:54 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @1 Some years ago I was just randomly looking up NASCAR stuff and I found a fan website. He had scanned various articles of NASCAR news from way back similar to what nascarman has been doing here. One of the ones he scanned was from 1986 talking about The Winston for 1987 and the plan was to run it at Rockingham. However as we now know due to the disappointment in turnout for The Winston at Atlanta it returned to Charlotte permanently for 1987. 6. 52 posted: 07.13.2020 - 2:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (3) @4 I feel like NASCAR should have stepped in there, they wont be competitive and run the risk of getting in a winner's way. 7. StenhouseFan47 posted: 07.13.2020 - 2:38 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Haley and Spire won a race fair and square, they have every right to be in this race. And Haley is a plenty capable driver not to screw things up for anyone else. 8. RaceFanX posted: 07.13.2020 - 3:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @5 Indeed. The original plan for the NASCAR race was that it would travel around to a different track every year, just like the MLB, NBA, and NHL All-Star Games. I didn't know that Rockingham was supposed to be the next one, cool. The financial failure of the Atlanta one in 1986 and the success of Humpy Wheeler's lobbying and great efforts to build up the race at Charlotte lead to its permanent home there for decades. 11. Canadianfan posted: 07.13.2020 - 3:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @10 Actually according to the documentary One Hot Night, Humpy said after the 1991 running R. J. Reynolds wasn't interested in doing it anymore. He went to a meeting and he proposed several ideas none of which the board liked. Eventually he just blurted out what about running it at night and they became interested even though he admitted he had no idea if it was possible or how to do it. If it wasn't for that I think The Winston would've gone on hiatus for a few years or disappeared altogether. 12. Tarheel posted: 07.13.2020 - 4:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) How about some predictions for the number of cars still running AND on the lead lap at the end. They'll be running over each other, and it'll be awesome. I don't think many cars will be outright lapped, but I think a good number will lose laps due to repair time in the pits. My bet is fewer than ten on the lead lap at the end. 13. Jimmie4life posted: 07.13.2020 - 6:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @6 If NASCAR let the Doge Car race in the All-Star race in 2014, they should let Justin Haley run this. He's a good driver. 14. Mile501 posted: 07.13.2020 - 6:56 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Regardless of circumstances, Justin Haley won a race. That qualifies him for this event. I don't understand why there is even a discussion about it as if there were some other alternative. 15. possum posted: 07.13.2020 - 7:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @14 - agree. Rather than bitching about a driver who won a race being in the event, we should be bitching about having 3 drivers who didn't win a race being part of it. The race was more meaningful when you had to win a race to get in. 16. Corey posted: 07.13.2020 - 8:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Just an observation, had Custer not won at Kentucky, 3 of the 4 SHR cars would have been in the Open. As of right now, the current break down of teams is Gibbs-4 Penske-3 Hendrick-3 Ganassi-2 SHR-2 Roush-1 Spire-1 4 of the 16 did not make the Playoffs last year, and likewise 4 playoff drivers are currently not in the All-Star race. Clint Bowyer, Aric Almirola, and William Byron are in the Open. Kyle Larson will most likely working or racing in his sprint car. 17. Corey posted: 07.13.2020 - 8:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @15 I say champions should get a pass, so Kenseth and Johnson are good. Newman however, he's there due to his All-Star win from 2002. I remember there used to be a limit to how long that win got you in the main event. It was something like 5 years at one point. 18. Corey posted: 07.13.2020 - 8:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) One more item. The defending race winner is Kyle Larson. I believe this year might be the first time the defending All-Star winner did not take part in the following years event. 19. Mile501 posted: 07.13.2020 - 8:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @17 - I believe the criteria used to be that you must have won the All-Star Race within the last 10 years to be eligible. I'm not sure when that went away, but I tend to agree with you. Newman has won 1 race in the last 7 years and hasn't finished better than 10th in the All-Star race in 12 years. 20. UnderdogFan89 posted: 07.13.2020 - 9:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @19 Looking back, that rule was ditched in 2015. Under the old rules, only 15 drivers would have been automatically entered that year, so they expanded the criteria. 21. Foote posted: 07.14.2020 - 12:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I wonder if/when the choose cone rule works to perfection in this race, if NASCAR would consider implementing a choose cone at every race this year. Mid season changes are rare, but it's a major issue that drivers in 4th or 6th have a better chance to win on a late race restart than drivers running 2nd or 3rd. 23. Corey posted: 07.14.2020 - 3:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @22 NASCAR should not implement this for this season. It should be held off til next season at the earliest. And if you think this is going to work to perfection, then that'll be a first for NASCAR. We've seen them bring in new procedures before only to have to tinker with them. Also I think you're going to find that guys are going to choose their lanes for other reasons than which one has the advantage. Just look at Bristol. Leader takes the outside, 2nd also takes the outside. Now where does third go? Better line on the outside and restart 6th? Or take the inside for track position and restart 2nd. 24. Pacer posted: 07.14.2020 - 3:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The AP had an opinion article in the run up to this race saying that Bubba Wallace deserved to be in it. Their regular racing writer Jenna Fryer wrote it so it was rightfully more highlighting "he didn't qualify through normal means but he and the Petty team are underdogs with less funding still trying to keep up with the big boys" than politically motivated. I suspect if he doesn't race in through the open Wallace will get the Fan Vote. Typically there's only like one campaign for the Fan Vote each year and it usually succeeds (remember Kenny Wallace pushing the fans to vote him in, the fans pushing Josh Wise in after he went memetic online, or everyone voting in Kyle Petty because Coca-Cola promised a charity donation if they would). 25. Mile501 posted: 07.14.2020 - 5:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @23 - Those kinds of choices that the drivers will get to make is what should make the "choose cone" idea very intriguing to follow. I hope it works well. @24 - "...he didn't qualify through normal means but he and the Petty team are underdogs with less funding still trying to keep up with the big boys." By that logic, any number of backmarker teams should be in the All-Star Race as well. Jenna Fryer could have done better than that line of argument. 26. Foote posted: 07.14.2020 - 6:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 23 By perfection I simply meant an immediate upgrade over the status quo. I'm sure there will be hiccups but none as severe as a 4th place starter having a better chance to win than 2nd place. 25 I'm intrigued about how much input the crew chief will have. I wonder if they will have plans such as, if the cars ahead of you do this, you choose this lane...or if it's purely on the driver. I too thought that argument about Bubba being is the ASR automatically is ridiculous, with flawed logic from Fryer. I will always be pro Bubba but like others, am getting fatigued by the media manufacturing bogus like that. 27. possum posted: 07.14.2020 - 6:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @22 - the "major issue" has existed since the first race where the lead lap cars lined up side-by-side. Since NASCAR's been happy to live with it for all those many years, I can't see why they should be in a panic to change immediately now. 28. Corey posted: 07.14.2020 - 7:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @26 I wouldn't call it an immediate upgrade either. By giving them choices, you open it up for teams to manipulate outcomes. Just imagine how much manufacture influence is going to take place at Daytona and Talladega. Then there are other places like the road courses where track position is more important than guys will just line up in the order with no changes. 29. 1995-Subaru-WRX-Sti posted: 07.14.2020 - 8:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "@26 I wouldn't call it an immediate upgrade either. Teams and drivers have manipulated races before. To think they will not take a chance on doing so is ignorant. At the superspeeds ways if you throw Manufacture order then it is another can of worms. 30. Foote posted: 07.14.2020 - 8:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) You guys have a point with manufacturers at superspeedways. But otherwise I don't see other downsides to the cone. So, if the rule goes well in the ASR, my hope would be that we implement the cone for 2021 at all tracks except the superspeedways. IMO that'd be the perfect solution, but we'll see how it goes tomorrow. 31. Ryan posted: 07.14.2020 - 10:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @5 @10 @11 It was good for Humpy (Charlotte), Winston, and NASCAR that the battle between Earnhardt and Elliott in '87 (Pass in the Grass) happened at Charlotte that way they could keep it. Of course the '89 battle between Rusty and DW was huge a well. I was actually there in attendance for the '87 race. It was unreal after the race. Earnhardt/Chevrolet and Elliott/Ford fans were literally fighting in the stands and out in the fields where you parked. And "One Hot Night" was as memorable as '87 if not more. Of course it had to include Earnhardt on the last lap and then two drivers' whose daddies were fierce rivals for the longest time, beating, banging, and crashing at the finish line while the checkered flag was waiving. Unreal moment. The winner didn't even get to celebrate in victory lane. I would say Humpy, Winston, and NASCAR all had to have been licking their chops after that one. They sure do owe a lot to Earnhardt when it came to bringing in the fans and from looking at it financially, that's for sure. 32. With Charlotte being as tied as it was to Winston when NEXTEL became the NASCAR Cup series' new sponsor the race remained there but there were regular rumors, admittedly more on the public end than from NASCAR itself, about moving the event to Richmond since it was the closest track to NEXTEL's headquarters in Reston, Virginia. The rumors circulated in the mid-2000s but faded away as it became apparent the race would stay at Charlotte and they were gone when Sprint took over NEXTEL. 39. possum posted: 07.15.2020 - 6:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @38 - those rumors certainly weren't coming from Nextel! I had contacts in business with them at that time, and they had no idea what it was they'd just bought sponsorship of; the idea that there was an all-star race, let alone the possibility of moving it would never have occurred to them (the sponsorship ended up working out pretty well for them, tho). 40. In 2007 Kyle and Kurt wrecked each other while racing for the lead and didn't talk to each other for 6 months. Joe Nemechek and Kevin Harvick nearly got into a fight in 2005. Vickers dumped Bliss to win the Open in 2005. Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin nearly fought in 2010. The race itself just doesn't mean anything anymore. The entire sport doesn't have nearly the prestige it used to. I don't think most of these guys even care. 132. But everyone treated the race like it was stage 1 of the Food City 500 and just cruised around, I think the race has run its course and no longer has any use, it hasn't been exciting in years, hasn't given us a memorable moment in years, and a million bucks just isn't worth making any enemies to these drivers. The open, like most years, was a much much better race. 133. Corey posted: 07.16.2020 - 2:05 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The problem with this race was that they didn't do anything to spice it up and force the guys to actually race. The only unique rule tonight was the cone rule and I really don't think it did anything to improve the show. Maybe because FOX didn't elaborate on its effects but it just seemed kind of afterthought. They need to add stuff that forces the crew chiefs to really think outside the box on strategy. But tonight, was just a truncated version of a typical points race. No inversions, no mandatory green flag stops, no use of option tires, etc. Tonight, they tried to pass of a mundane all-star race with a new paint job. 134. I didn't go back and check each year, but I seriously doubt that's ever happened before. Today's drivers make plenty of money and many of them lack the interesting personalities that were common in the past. Plus, it's the same set of drivers up front that run up front every week. Just look at the top 6 finishers--it's nearly identical to the current top 6 in points. Perhaps we don't need an All-Star Race anymore. 138. Some came close before, like the Atlanta one. And yeah, I agree. It was better than some recent ones, but the thing is all things that made The Winston cool are now in regular races, and an inversion is not really doable. Maybe they could go full-on dirt style with heats and a B-Main and a C-Main 140. Foote posted: 07.16.2020 - 10:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Apparently Jim Johnson was in this race. Can we please not do, or speak about, the glowing undercar lights ever again. FOX was totally obsessed with this, it was just corny. TV presentation was awful. Mostly the announcers, but there were some tech glitches too. I liked the no inversion format, less gimmicky. Agree with the comment that the final segment needed to be longer. Even 10 more laps would have been OK, enough for the cars who took 4 tires in the last segment break to become a factor. It's obvious NASCAR was trying to pander to fans who wanted a demolition derby finish... which they didn't get. The Open was more interesting that the main event, but to me it usually is. Maybe bump up the prize money for the Open, so the drivers and teams who aren't the usual suspects have a shot at some big cash as well as advancing to the All-Star race. 145. Mile501 posted: 07.16.2020 - 11:39 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @139 - I like that idea. Break the field up into 3 or 4 parts and make them race their way into the main event. Also agree with you that the Open was a much better race. Not sure why many of the drivers really didn't seem to be trying in the main event, but the Open drivers seemed to be really on the limit. 149. It used to be one of two races each year when points didn't matter and drivers could race all-out, not worrying about the usual consequences of having a bad points night. Drivers who were in the championship hunt could take chances that they wouldn't ordinarily take. But with the playoff system we have now, points don't matter in most races (except for a small group of drivers who hover around 16th in points). So, what sets the All-Star Race apart? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
