"Racing is my livelihood, and I'm not making any money. You just can't beat these factory teams" Don Oldenberg affirmed. He stated then that he he had effectively quit NASCAR following this race. Several drivers and owners spoke about moving to Johnny Marcum's MARC series, which didn't allow any factory backed support, or mechanics, strictly independents. The series had also recently established a Southern division after merging with the Southern Racing Enterprise (SRE) sanctioning body in late 1956, making a switch for drivers much more feasible. Along with Oldenberg, Jim Massey, Gwyn Staley, Bill Poor, Neil Castles, and owner Hubert Westmoreland were all noted as either being exasperated by the factories, or having considered joining the midwestern based series. True to his word, this would be the last major race in NASCAR for Don Oldenberg. Upon leaving the track, the truck carrying Curtis Turner's Ford overturned and caught fire just outside of Asheville, making the car a total loss. Souring the situation regarding independents, this posed no threat to Turner. As he'd have a brand new convertible ready for him the next race at Spartanburg, where he would again win going away. 2.
