In 1957, I was 10 years old...and a big Curtis Turner fan. My uncle took me to my first race somewhere around that time (could've been a year earlier or a year later) and it was at the Charlotte Fairgrounds...and a convertible night race. They had a little covered grandstand on the frontstretch, and the cars pitted right in front of us. (Of course, there wasn't much pitting in a 100-mile, 200-lap race.) I remember that we got there early and also watched the qualifying runs, and that Turner started on the 2nd or 3rd row....and spun out on the 1st lap trying to pass for the lead, dropping all the way to the back of the field. He spent the rest of the race driving in his usual fashion...flat out...passing cars while trying to get back to the front, before he blew up/crashed somewhere in the middle of the race. I remember him parking his car right in front of us & drinking a coca-cola. According the the finish rundown here, this looks like the race....as he started 4th & crashed after 90 laps. Here is what doesn't add up, though: I found a newspaper article from August 24th, 1957 (the next day) from the nearby Gastonia Gazette that said Curtis Turner WON that race on the last lap before 7,400 fans. One would think that next day's newspaper article would have been right and that this site has this race mixed up with another one. (They ran 2 or 3 convertible races at this track for 2 or 3 years there.) If anyone can help me straighten this out...or give me the date of the race I am talking about going to...when Turner started near the front but did NOT win, I'd really appreciate it. By the way, here is the newspaper article on the race that was supposed to have been run here on August 23rd, 1957. Hope you can read it. If it reverts to the first page of the paper, the article is on page #10: http://www.newspaperarchive.com/PdfViewerTags.aspx?img=65507974&src=browse 2.
