Gwyn Staley was killed in a first lap accident in this race.

Billy Myers was killed at Darlington in the 1957 Southern 500 while
racing a Petty Oldsmobile. Then about six months later, Gwyn Staley died
racing for Lee's brother, Julian Petty, in this Richmond ragtop race.
What a rough few months for the Petty bunch in addition to the pain
endured by the families of the drivers who lost their lives.

Got your timeline mixed up Billy Myers was killed in 1958, considering
he finished 14th in this race.
