Yes, from 1956 to 1959 NASCAR did have a seperate series that raced
convertables.

There were often races that had both the normal cars and the
convertables on the track together.

The inside lane was comprised of hardtop, the outside line convertibles
at the '59 500. The hardtops had an incredible advantage in speed .I'm
glad to see these records available , The ragtops were the forrunner to
the Busch /Nationwide series. Check out all the Hall of famers competing
in the series.

Larry Frank drove a 1958 Ford in both the Convertible race, and Daytona
500 in 1959, not a 1957 Chevy.

Larry Odo ran in the Daytona 500, so he CAN'T be a withdrawn entry. Most
likely he should be added here as "Did not start."

QUALIFYING TIMES FOR THIS RACE

1. Glen Wood (128.81 mph)
2. Gene White (120.04)
3. Ken Rush (124.68)
4. Billy Carden (123.35)
5. Larry Frank (121.80)
6. Joe Eubanks (120.77)
7. Richard Petty (127.82)
8. Shorty Rollins (126.42)
9. Bob Harkey (128.20)
10. George Green (112.73)

These were the only drivers who actually set official times for the
convertible race. Everyone else was allowed to start after they ran 10
laps in practice in excess of 100 mph. A couple of drivers qualified for
the hardtop race but moved across to the convertible event.

Note:
Top5 after 10 laps = Rollins, Panch, Rush, Harkey, Frank.
Top5 after 20 laps = Rollins, Panch, Frank, Harkey, White.
Top5 after 30 laps = Rollins, Panch, Petty, Frank, White.

The only real incident during the race (with no caution): Bob Harkey
running in third place in the 26th lap when spun off the backstretch
pavement onto the dirt bordering the track and sent up a cloud of dust.
He limped into the pits for repairs and resumed racing after losing a lap.

Richard Petty finishes an impressive third in his first race at Daytona.
He'd go on to win a dozen races at this iconic track.
