Interestingly, she drove a car owned by a Ruby Flock, who must have been related to the 4 racing Flock siblings. (I don't know how). It was the only time she was ever listed as a car owner. 6. She also assisted Bob with the operation of the track he built near Atlanta after breaking his back in an on-track accident in 1951. Carl a speed boat racer, was the oldest, Bob, Fonty (Truman Fontell) and Tim were followed closely by Ethel, the oldest of their 5 sisters and were known as The Flying Flocks. Ethel Flock Mobley was the first female to race in the state of Georgia and when she ran at Daytona Beach in 1949 finishing 11th she was ahead of Bob and Fonty. This was the first time for a brother sister entry in NASCAR. Ethel Mobley drove a brand new '48 Cadillac convertible in this race. Louise Smith rolled her Ford on the approach to the North Turn, but spectators righted the car and she continued on. 13. Since it would be pretty hard to be a crew chief for one car while driving another, I think we can safely say that Elder drove the #30. 20. I cannot find the book now. I remember a Racine, WI female completing one lap in first race. I am from Racine and would appreciate any information. THANKS 23. However it also says this was the "only other mishap" relative to when Louise Smith flipped over, so I'm inclined to believe Clardy was driving in relief for Buckshot Morris. 25. The accepted format did not result in the final standings of record so I went through every result for the year. My research resulted in 2 formulas to determine points, one for the winner and one for everyone else: [1] WinnerPts = Purse/20 [2] Points = WinnerPts - ((WinnerPts/10)*(FinishPos-1)) Points for Daytona Beach (Based on points awarded this race purse was $4K, not $5K) Byron: 200 T. Flock: 180 Mundy: 160 Littlejohn: 140 Blair: 120* F. Christian: 100 Snowden: 80 Sosebee: 60 Thompson: 40 Etheridge: 20 Mobley: 16 Thomas: 12 S. Smith: 8 Teague: 4 Carden: 2 *Blair received a 45 point penalty at some point in 1949 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
