Mantz was unhurt, and presumably Tommy Thompson was in the crash. I don't know any details but apparently Red Harvy, who finished second, was "a last minute substitute driver." 4. His son, Jim Jr., would later race in ARCA/USAC through the 60's. James Wesley was car #1 Gayle Warren was car #44 1/2 (44.5), and his status should be crash. From the picture, Warren's car looks to have been previously owned by Bill Blair, who entered the car number 41 1/2 throughout 1950 and `51. Only here, the 1 had been taped into a 4. https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=10201351637532383&set=pb.1216916302.-2207520000.. https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=10201351636892367&set=pb.1216916302.-2207520000.. 9. thog posted: 12.12.2020 - 8:33 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @8 Judging by these pictures, it looks like Joe Merola was in car #69. 10. thog posted: 12.13.2020 - 11:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @9 - oof that was short, haha. I see Merola is now #69 on the result sheet but to elaborate more, Merola did drive a #69 Ford at Pittsburgh in 1949, so I'm willing to believe 69 was a personal number of his and was possibly a self-owned car. Also, judging by the pictures @8 provided, it appears Johnny Mantz rolled over in the big lap 195 accident. 11. thog posted: 01.01.2021 - 2:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Looking at the pictures #8 provided again, could that #44½ car have actually be driven by Tommy Thompson instead? It looks like it was collected in the big lap 195 wreck with the Merola #69 car, and unless Gayle Warren spent the whole race in the pits, there is almost NO WAY he could have wound up dead last. The pictures say 28 cars started and 21 finished. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
