Lee Petty, Lloyd Moore and Dick Linder mathematically eliminated themselves from the championship by not taking part in this race. Moore's teammate Bill Rexford, 2nd in championship, was also not present. Roberts, Turner and Byron all run into problems and couldn't make any ground in championship. A wheel came off of Minter's car and then while trying to avoid the wheel, Slick Smith hit Peter Shaw. 6.
