Buesink's gamble paid off - Moore, 38 year old farmer from New York who is still alive in 2007 and is oldest living NASCAR driver, won his first and only Grand National race. Rexford finished 3rd and was now 111.5 points ahead of Fireball Roberts who finished 6th in Martinsville. With one race to go, worth 275 points, Rexford could clinch the title with 5th place finish. Overall standings after 18 of 19 races: 1. Bill Rexford 1959 2. Fireball Roberts 1847.5 -111.5 3. Lloyd Moore 1395 -564 4. Curtis Turner 1373.5 -585.5 5. Red Byron 1316 -643 6. Lee Petty 1315 -644 7. Johnny Mantz 1282 -677 8. Chuck Mahoney 1217.5 -741.5 9. Dick Linder 1121 -838 10. Jimmy Florian 801 -1158 11. Bill Blair 681 -1278 12. Herb Thomas 588 -1371 13. Cotton Owens 500 -1459 14. Fonty Flock 459 -1500 15. Clyde Minter 427 -1532 16. Dick Burns 341.5 -1617.5 17. Art Lamey 320 -1639 18. Bob Flock 312.5 -1646.5 19. Frank Mundy 295.5 -1663.5 20. Buck Baker 284 -1675 2. It also looks like there were in fact more then 13 cars in this race. From what I can tell, the actual number of cars that started is somewhere around 16 or 17. 8. This was the first race since NASCAR's inception where not a single driver in the race would ever go their entire career without racing against Petty. There would not be another race where this would occur until the 2016 Daytona 500 on February 21, 2016 - Over 65 years later. 13. Some of them were racing at Martinsville on the same day however. 15. Also, this was the only cup race at this track. 16. Also, very likely the only race where he led laps (the most laps, actually) although stats for that are not 100% complete. 17. He drove the #60, #20, #8, #80, #59, #61 & #62, all owned by Julian Buesink. However, he drove the #60 the most (7 starts,) so this is generally remembered as his car number that year. Also, his only win (at Canfield) came in the #60 car. 19. Andy U posted: 12.10.2018 - 1:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wow, great info in these posts. The October 15 issue of Muncie's "The Star Press" said three drivers, Jim Romine, Paul Parks, and Johnny Mantz were scheduled to enter (which would be a full 16). The following day's pressing of the same paper with the race report said 16 cars started and 10 finished. I did find more cars in the race and I tried my best to identify the manufacturers of them. #0 - Oldsmobile #1 - Chevrolet #3 - Oldsmobile #4 - Chevrolet (this car DNFed sometime during the race) #55 - Ford ('49-'50 model) #71 - Ford ('46-'48 model) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
