Rexford blew engine and now Fireball could win the title with 6th or better. But he tried to win and also blew his engine letting Rexford win the championship. Lee Petty won the race and took 3rd place in the championship. He was stripped of all 820 points that he earned in first 9 races for racing in non-NASCAR event. Without the penalty he would've easily won the title. After the season Red Byron, 1948 Modified and 1949 Stricktly Stock champion was also stripped of all 1316 points and 6th place for taking part in NSCRA race at Lakewood Speedway in this weekend. Overall standings after this race you can see in 1950 Grand National page. There are some unclear things about the points but that's as far as I can reach using race results and top-50 points from racing-reference. 8 races in 1949 and 19 in 1950 was quite easy task. Let's see what can I do about 1951. 41 races may be too much to calculate. 3. hyltonfan08 posted: 01.23.2009 - 3:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ewell Weddle's sponsor was Esso Service. 4. awesomegordonfan posted: 11.12.2010 - 7:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) About Dan's post, that's the first of two point deductions that cost a championship, the other Martin in '91, fined 46 points and losing by 26 5. Anyway, here's the standings of the 1950 season, under the regular (1975-2003) point system. With the obvious difference being that anyone who runs a non NASCAR sanctioned race loses all points they had up until that point. (Anyone know when that rule was revoked? I don't remember it being an issue when I was a kid.) 1. Bill Rexford 2293 2. Lloyd Moore 2145 (-148) 3. Curtis Turner 2103 (-190) 4. Dick Linder 1852 (-441) 5. Chuck Mahoney 1406 (-887) 6. Jimmy Florian 1271 (-1022) 7. Fireball Roberts 1242 (-1051) 8. Lee Petty 1194 (-1099) (Without the penalty, Lee would have won by 197 points.) 9. Herb Thomas 1020 (-1273) (1741 and seventh in points without penalty.) 10. Gayle Warren 1001 (-1292) 11. George Hartley 983 12. Bill Blair 933 (2081 and fifth in points without penalty) 13. Jim Paschal 588 Tied for 25th: Weldon Adams 588 27. Dick Clothier 575 28. Ted Chamberlain 567 29. Ray Duhigg 566 30. Art Lamay 547 (Why he wasn't penalized, I don't know, as he won a AAA stock car race late in the year.) 31. Bob Flock 541 32. Johnny Grubb 522 33. Jimmy Thompson 473 34. Elmer Wilson 466 35. Now, can I do 1951? I should be able to, the only real difficulty is remembering whether or not someone already raced this season or not. (I've already done that to Frank Mundy this season.) 7. kup posted: 05.24.2012 - 1:14 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) UPS - Universal Points System - after all races of 1950 Cup Points for a driver = His Distance /devided/ His Average Finish Dis/AvFn = Driver = KM-Miles / AV-FN 183 Lee Petty 1407 / 7,7 125 Tim Flock 1275 / 10,2 108 Dick Linder 1060 / 9,8 107 Bill Rexford 1170 / 10,9 99 Bill Blair 1253 / 12,6 8. Then equal points goes for every next pair of cars/drivers: 3+4, 5+6, etc. This TTSS adds to races not only feud, but also a co-operation. Every year/season can have 2 "gold" champions, then 2 "silver", 2 "bronze", etc. The basic idea is to compare current race/year system (aka "deficit") with TTSS (aka "plentiness"). No need to have 3 (triple) or more winners, as 2 is just oke to compare the root. 13. Bill Rexford wins the championship by leading 7.4% of the laps he completed (98/1326) and one win, his only lead lap finish. But consistency is more important than winning. Even if you completed 300 less laps than your competitor, somehow. 19. Thankfully it wasn't as big of a deal back then. 20. Corey posted: 12.06.2020 - 7:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @18 You're missing the anomaly of the 1950 season, The Southern 500. NASCAR based the points off of the purse for each race. The Southern 500 had $25,000 purse and therefore gave 1250 points for the winner. Rexford happened to finish 4th in this event for 875 points. No other race gave their winner more then 300 points. It's the same reason Johnny Mantz and Cotton Owens finished 6th and 13th respectively in the points despite starting 3 races each. Even the championship runner up Fireball Roberts earned 61% of his point total in that one event. 21. Mile501 posted: 12.06.2020 - 7:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @19 - Ryan Newman in 2014 probably came the closest to challenging Rexford for that distinction. Really, that just goes to show how bad the championship format was in both of those seasons. 22. Mile501 posted: 12.06.2020 - 7:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @18 - Back then, different races awarded different numbers of points. In 1950, Darlington was the big difference. Bill Rexford finished 4th and scored a considerable number of points (875 points, in fact, if the data someone posted in that race thread was correct), while Curtis Turner crashed and finished 60th after starting on the pole. Had Turner gotten a solid finish at Darlington, he might have won this championship instead. That also explains how Johnny Mantz finished 6th in points despite starting only 3 races. He won Darlington, which is where almost his entire point total came from. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
