Thinking he was at least a lap down, Eubanks was just trying to nurse his ride to a solid finish. Thompson, meanwhile, drove like a man possessed & flew past an unsuspecting Eubanks - he would attempt to rev it up in chase, but was no match in the battle of battered battering rams. It would prove a popular win to the Detroit auto execs present, & if Bill France is happy, everybody's happy (or something like that). Noting Thompson, he had a reputation for being extremely aggressive dating back to his dirt track roots that wasn't well received by all involved, surely including Curtis Turner. x22 drivers would win of the field 1st of x2 poles by Marshall Teague. Also not noted above, a young up & comer by the name of Hershel McGriff made his 3rd Cup start in this race.
