I saw a NASCAR sanctioned Modified race in their first season, 1948, at the Dover, NJ 1/2 banked clay track, won by Johnny Rogers. Buddy Shuman finished 2nd and Frank Mundy 3rd, in hot (for their day) flat-head Ford coupes. Incidentally Fonty Flock rolled his Olds in the first turn in this race at the Morristown track. A flat 1/2 dirt that featured weekly NASCAR Modified Stock races during the early 50's. Most of the drivers filling out the field in this race were the regular weekly modified drivers. The only regular Morristown Modified driver not in the field was Wally Campbell. 2. The bottom 14 finishers went home with ten bucks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
