He was the first fatality during a Grand National race. The first
fatality in a NASCAR sanctioned event was Slick Davis during a Modified
race at Greensboro Fairgrounds on July 25, 1948.

In addition to the Mann accident, Nelson Applegate suffered a suspected
skull fracture when he crashed after going through the fence.

Larry Mann was driving a green Hudson. The car was nicknamed "The Green
Hornet." After his unfortunate death, Grand National drivers felt a
green car was "unlucky." For years there were no green cars in NASCAR's
Grand National Division. It wasn't until 1968 when Elmo Langley drove a
green and white Mercury Cyclone that green cars began to return to NASCAR.

This race was held two days after the famous 1952 Flatwoods Monster-UFO
encounter in West Virginia.

Nelson Applegate's car number was #3, and Larry Mann was involved in the
accident, spinning his car only inches away from plowing into Nelson's car.

UPDATE. Nelson Applegate was not the driver of the #3 car. I will
confirm the correct driver of the 3 soon.

Nelson Applegate - No number confirmed. Originally thought to be 3.
Felix Wilkes - 95% certain he was the 3.
Gene Darragh - 5
Neil Cole - 52
Eddie Van Horn - 104

an actual confirmation.

Ray Erickson exited his car sometime during the race to let Herb Thomas
drive.
