I'm picturing Bill France standing at the exit gate of the track with
his wallet open and when the lowest finishers pass by they stop and he
just hands them a $10 bill.

Pole speed, not average speed, and that has to be an estimate since it's
so precise and divisible by 3. It appears they just rounded Baker's lap
time to 27 seconds flat. 27 seconds per half mile is 54 seconds per
mile, which is 0.015 hours per mile, and the reciprocal of that is
66.666, and I think it's a lot likelier in that era that they just
rounded his lap time to 27 seconds precisely when it really wasn't.

Fred Starr and Eddie Paskovich flipped in the same accident on the 7th
lap, with Paskovich continuing on for a short while before retiring.

Presumably Elton Hildreth and Johnny Zeke were also involved.
