Clark was struck again by several following cars and died at the scene of the accident. There were no injuries in the Haggerty crash. Cain (and most of the other drivers) was driving at a considerable disadvantage. The dirt from the track was covering his windshield so thickly that he had to use his left hand to wipe a ten inch square of his windshield just to see where he was going. He never saw the officer until he hit the windshield of his car. It was this accident, not Haggerty's crash, that caused the race to be shortened. Steven Clark's page will be online soon at Motorsport Memorial. E. R. Kelly Oklahoma City 3. Spen posted: 06.24.2012 - 12:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The north series didn't get started until '79, so it's certainly not that. However, all but one of the drivers with an "N" after their numbers came from either Oregon or Washington. (And the one whoe didn't came from northern CA.) So I'm just guessing here, but it's possible that the West series had 'northern' and 'southern' divisions this season. USAC's stock car series operated under similar rules around that time. But I haven't found any evidence to support that theory. 7. nascar_vd / racing-reference.info posted: 02.23.2016 - 10:48 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Note: Driver Standings after this race (Top20): 1) Buck Baker = 6516 points 2) Herb Thomas = 6316 3) Lee Petty = 5480 4) Speedy Thompson = 4640 5) Jim Paschal = 4330 6) Billy Myers = 4068 7) Tim Flock = 4030 8) Gwyn Staley = 3378 9) Ralph Moody = 3276 10) Fireball Roberts = 2830 11) Rex White = 2433 12) Joe Eubanks = 2240 13) Marvin Panch = 1868 14) Johnny Allen = 1688 15) Al Watkins = 1630 16) Paul Goldsmith = 1568 17) Joe Weatherly = 1500 18) Jack Smith = 1416 19) Frank Mundy = 1416 20) Harvey Henderson = 1394 8. Looking just at Johnny Kieper and Ed Negre, who seem to have alternated running the #88/88N and #98/98N, some joint races they seem to have run without the N, and some standalone races they ran with the N. The N was only used at Portland and San Mateo, but not for all races at those tracks, not even for all joint races. Perhaps a driver had to chose which series he scored points in and change the number accordingly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
