Larry Flynn started 55th. Arden Mounts started 59th. 6. Anonymous posted: 03.14.2011 - 5:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Both Joe Weatherly and Jack Smith spun but recovered and finished. 7. As he climbed out of his car, he noticed he was bleeding, and like some people due when they see their own blood, passed out. Tbe track officials saw Dink unconscious, tangled in his safety belt, and upside down, head in helmet, with the helmet resting on the race surface. He wasn't really hurt that badly. 8. Does anyone have any information about an accident involving a car going into the pits? As I recall, several NASCAR officials/ pit crewmen were killed. Can't find any record of this but remember seeing them lying on the track in front of stands. 13. This was caused by contact with Roy Tyner, and may have been prevented with an outside pit wall. I am sorry you had to witness that, and hope you've been okay. Speaking of large accidents, Larry Flynn made contact with Bill Brown during this race. Brown, sporting a very rare onboard (on the front bumper), flew over the wall, destroying the guardrail there, and rolled down the bank, and Flynn's gas can flew out. It was hit by someone and a fire started, which spread to the car. Both were okay, thankfully. 14. The other withdrawal was Johnny Fite, driving a #20 1955 Plymouth. He'd qualified in between the #35 and #13 1956 Fords. 17. While Taylor, the 1951 Southern 500 runner-up, rejoined the tour for a few more races he never quite reached back to the heights he did before. His comeback race here ended quickly with an engine failure in the early laps. 18. Looking back, races were definitely different in how they raced, qualified, had race entertainment, and how drivers built and set up each car. Speeds were also much faster than 1955, going from 112 to 120mph. Of course, the record now is 184mph. Drivers who were amazed at the speeds they went during these times would be absolutely surprised to see the incredible times we put up today. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
