Earnhard started from the Pole in the #22 DePalo Engineering car
normally driven by Fireball Roberts (later became the Holman Moody
team). Ralph was actually flagged the winner, but a protest was filed
and after some checking Speedy Thompson was declared the winner. Period
article talks about the fact that Earnhardt had to take the track
microphone and tell the crowd he was ok with the decision, they were
ready to tear the grandstands down..local boy done wrong....

This race was the Championship 4 cutoff
Those in the top 8 that went to Willow Springs to race in the 1957
season opener were Fireball Roberts (3rd), Jim Paschal and Billy Myers
(tied for 6th)
Buck Baker and Speedy Thompson were the automatic qualifiers, while
Roberts and Lee Petty tied for 3rd...The Cleveland County Fairgrounds
accident left Herb Thomas in 5th, and out of the championship fight

.Race name honoring Buddy Shuman on the closest race to the one year
anniversary of his death. He died in a hotel fire on November 13, 1955,
one day before the start of the '56 GN season. Information taken from
