What Big Bill was doing is beyond my understanding. 4. David Troppens posted: 12.05.2011 - 9:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) My guess to answer your question had to do with the regions. Back in the day, NASCAR would have a series of races on the west coast that the "regular" drivers didn't attend. It would be more the west coast racers racing against themselves. Frequently, these races were on the same dates as other more traditional races in the south or on the east coast. Usually the races are during the same point chase, but this would be a clear exception. He probably was trying to drum up as much interest in his association as possible, by creating two events. I could see someone that wasn't in the points chase going west and trying to get a head start on the next season, while the current champs would stay and battle it out for the title. Or maybe just not go west because of the cost. It was 1957, actually 1956. I'm sure most fans really didn't understand the point system or any of that stuff anyway. People were probably just excited to see a race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
