At least one caution flew in this race, that being on lap 18 for Bill
Champion taking a pretty lazy set of rolls off the track after losing a
wheel.

Bill Champion's flip marked a threefer in the NASCAR flip club. The past
three drivers that rolled in the Cup series all had the first name of
Bill, but the streak would come to an end with the triple flip in the
early stages of the '57 Southern 500 which sadly claimed Bobby Myers.

Buck Baker collected his first win of 10 during the season and with
Marvin Panch taking 11th, Baker was starting his serious climb to
eventually pass Panch and capture the season-long point standings
championship.

Roberts was leading but had to pit because of a broken right front
wheel. He was pulling away when the issue happened.
