How did Gwyn Staley win by two laps and only lead one? Was there a DQ
involved?

Back then they keep as good a statistics as now. Often the number of
laps led was not recorded so the they'd only credit the winner with
leading the final lap (because he obvivously did)

grid positions 22nd and worse?

@6 I believe the Top 4 in the 2011 Daytona 500 were 22nd and worse. 2009
Daytona 500 had the Top 7 started 20th or worse. Could be more, but
those were the first that came to mind.
