Jones took the flag. However, Welborn had illegally driven an convertible. But Massey wasn't given credit either. So there is one more race then there has a been a win. 3. The overall winner (Welborn) received credit for a victory in his division (convertibles), while Lee Petty received first place points in the Grand National division (but not a victory). The real question is, when Possum Jones took over for Welborn midway through the race, who was driving Jones's car the rest of the way? 4. Dieringer was not competing in the race, but apparently was at the track and took over for Possum right after he took over for Welborn. 5. nascar_vd / racing-reference.info posted: 01.13.2015 - 6:08 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Note: Bob Welborn drove the first 183 laps (leader) and was relieved by Possum Jones on his first pit stop in lap 184. It's a sweepstakes race between Grand National and Convertible Division. Welborn gets credit for first place points (700 points for this race) by the NASCAR rules. Possum Jones started the race in the #48 but came in after 100 laps with Darel Dieringer taking over his car for the remainder of the race. 6. nascar_vd / racing-reference.info posted: 03.29.2017 - 12:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Note: Convertible (16 cars) = #1A, 3, 4, 5, 11, 12, 19, 21, 38, 48, 49, 68, 75, 76, 90, 93. All others = Grand National (24 cars) Note: Glen Wood was relieved by Pee Wee Jones. Note: Art Binkley was relieved by Bill Poor. Caution: first caution lap 5 due to spin outs by Bill Amick in South Turn and Speedy Thompson in North Turn. Caution: third caution for Paul Goldsmith figured in the major accident of the race when he blew a motor on lap 336 (for the leader, Goldsmith was 2 laps down at the moment) and rapped his car against the retaining wall on the North Turn as Speedy Thompson plowed into the rear of the car. 7. nascar_vd / racing-reference.info posted: 03.29.2017 - 1:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Grand National Driver standings after this race: (top25): 1) Buck Baker = 10028 points 2) Marvin Panch = 9340 3) Lee Petty = 7912 4) Speedy Thompson = 7884 5) Fireball Roberts = 7796 6) Jack Smith = 7728 7) Johnny Allen = 6884 8) L.D.
