Wonder why the crowd was so poor? 6. thog posted: 07.11.2020 - 2:54 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Lowest attendance figure in NASCAR until Darlington in May. 7. Anonymous posted: 07.11.2020 - 10:19 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) A Couple Factors Played Into The Attendance. 1: It Being Run So Close To The Next Race @Concord. 2: The SC State Fair Going On At The Same Time. 3: It Was Very Windy That Day, An Avg. Of 19mph - At A Dirt Track It Might've Been A Factor. Lastly, Newberry Had The Smallest Population Of The SC Racing Cities. In 1957 Roughly 7500 People Lived There - By Comparison Spartanburg Had Over 36000, And Columbia Speedway Is (Despite It's Name) Just Outside The State's Capital, So It Definitely Had More Of A Crowd. Newberry Would've Been Kinda In The Middle Of Nowhere & Without A Pedigree To Carry It (I Would Describe Darlington As Middle Of Nowhere But It's Close To Myrtle Beach) Newberry (By Today's Travel) Is 45min From Columbia, 1hr From Spartanburg, & Even Further From Myrtle Beach, Darlington, Etc. Add That Newberry Was A Cotton-Fueled Agricultural City At This Time & All Told, It Starts To Add Up. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
