Lee Petty was declared the victor four days after the event was
completed. Curtis Turner finished thinking he was the winner, figuring
he had lapped all but second-place Speedy Thompson. Turner allowed Petty
to drive past him on the second turn of lap 198 thinking Petty had been
lapped. However, after the race Petty argued he won. Once the score
cards were read Petty was given the victory. The results did not please
Turner. "That Mama Elizabeth (Petty's wife and scorekeeper) has the
fastest pencil in NASCAR."
