It was the second race in a row that NASCAR had disqualified a driver for infractions discovered in post race inspection. 4. Still active, though, racing on Sunday nights. 6. It also said that before post-race DQ, Squirt Johns had originally placed third. 7. zuel660 posted: 12.07.2020 - 8:21 am Rate this comment: (3) (0) The 3 DQ's (Johns, Layfield, Mahan) were 3 of the best local drivers of the area at that time, & probably were more than a match for the Cup regulars. Like previously stated, it's likely Nascar wasn't keen on their big stars getting shown up. Cup regulars vs area drivers at short tracks is something long gone from Nascar, but touring series vs local drivers is still very much a part of dirt late model & sprint car racing. 8. Sounds about right. 9. possum posted: 12.07.2020 - 7:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @8 - Well, it could be - NASCAR even today is well known for adjusting the rules to "make the show better", or at least whatever in their opinion is a better show. OTOH, the guy who did finish 3rd, Duell, was another PA driver. And so was the guy in 5th, Rafter. So it doesn't really look like NASCAR was trying to favor the Southern drivers. It's also true that the rules for what was allowed were a lot different in those days, and things which any hot-rodder would have considered routine, like port-matching the head to the manifold, were not allowed. So I could easily see a situation where the inspector checked part numbers before the race, said they're stock, and then after race saw the grinding and DQ'd the guys for something they thought was totally allowed. At this late date we're not likely to ever know what actually happened. 10. zuel660 posted: 03.26.2021 - 6:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Courtesy of the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame..... "Allegedly, the three drivers were told their fuel-injected Chevrolets would be allowed to compete in the short field of 21 cars, despite the NASCAR rule permitting only carbureted engines. However, once the race was complete, NASCAR officials buckled under to the protests of the other competitors and sent the three drivers home without pay." 11. They should have at least gotten their money under the table, even if they were listed as DQs in the official results. 12.
