That's strange to see the race's average speed to be faster than the
pole speed.

Rex White had the slowest pole speed ever for a NASCAR race. This was
also the the second and final time that the average speed was faster
than the pole speed.

At just a few seconds short of 32 minutes, this has to be the shortest
time taken to complete a NASCAR race.

This was the Cup series' only visit to Buffalo's Civic Stadium. The
stadium eventually became the original home of the Buffalo Bills
football team but they had moved out by the early 1970s. The stadium,
the track long since torn out, was mostly torn down in 1988 and what was
left was converted into a high school football stadium.

literally a day earlier.

What could explain the difference in pole speed and race speed?

Extremely poor track conditions in qualifying? Surely it wasn't raining
during quals?

Exact same 19 man field as prior night race in Toronto. Very unusual,

Toronto and Buffalo are only 105 miles apart. Anyone making the trip to
Toronto would compete in Buffalo as you are already there.

@2 - now that the site has more data, there's more than 2 such races -
seems to be about 6 or so. This seems to be the only one on pavement, tho.

@11 - at this late date, who knows. My guess would be someone oiled down
the track before quals due to a mechanical mishap. If there were some
other classes racing as prelims they could burn the oil off and leave a
better surface for the race. OTOH, maybe the guy with the stopwatch was
out to lunch, and the time is bogus.
