Had they run one more lap it would have been almost exactly 100 miles.
And who builds a .9 mile track anyway? I have to believe it was a
miscalculation in the design or a Darlington situation where an obstacle
couldn't be moved.

Eubanks took the lead on lap 98 when Junior Johnson crashed out while
leading and lead the final 12 laps to get his lone victory.

In response to #2...This track was an original track from 1949 and Grand
National races were held here until 1968 when Talladega took over the date

From 1949-55 the track was measured as a mile, not sure why it was
re-measured and shortened
