with this win, roberts had taken six of the seven races he ran frank
strickland's 57 chevy. roberts finished second to junior johnson in the
season finale at lakewood. in the other non-win he finished 30th after a
gas leak. the .750 batting average is the best ever for a driver/car
combination in the premier division. he ran his first two races for
other owners.

I don't think Martinsville allowed 3-digit numbers. Second track to have
that rule, after Darlington.

This event was actually scheduled as two 50-lap qualifying races to set
the field for the 400-lap feature. It was a sweepstakes race. The first
race was for the convertibles, and the second one was for the hard tops.
Bob Welborn DNF'd in his qualifying race in Julian Petty's car. Lee
Petty pulled rookie son Richard from the line-up and gave his #2 Olds to
Welborn to race in the main event.

Does anyone know why Bill Poor's car was numbered #50 instead of his
usual #711?
