It was a sweepstakes race. The first race was for the convertibles, and the second one was for the hard tops. Bob Welborn DNF'd in his qualifying race in Julian Petty's car. Lee Petty pulled rookie son Richard from the line-up and gave his #2 Olds to Welborn to race in the main event. 5.
