Lee Petty and his son Richard switched numbers for this event. Richard drove his father's #42 while Lee drove Richard's number at the time, #2 2. There was a major steel strike in '58, and because of it, there weren't as many '58 model cars availible as there would normally be. Besides, with factory teams being absent from the '58 season, the drivers weren't under any instructions to push the newer cars, and the '57 models were still pretty darn good, so most of the drivers stuck with them. 7. Driver Fred Harb blocked the track with his own car to protect Morton from oncoming traffic. Harb was later given the John Naughton Sportsmanship Award for this heroic act. 8. rob posted: 10.25.2013 - 7:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Thanks, Spen. Great info. It was fun to be able to identify the model of car back then. 9. Richards number was not, so lee started is because he had a better chance to qualify for the events. 10. rob posted: 08.29.2014 - 7:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I didn't even know they had a winner's circle program back then. 11. The 2 car was a convertible and by switching Lee was able to increase his convertible points for the year. 12. Then equal points goes for every next pair of cars/drivers: 3+4, 5+6, etc. This TTSS adds to races not only feud, but also a co-operation. Every year/season can have 2 "gold" champions, then 2 "silver", 2 "bronze", etc. The basic idea is to compare current race/year system (aka "deficit") with TTSS (aka "plentiness"). No need to have 3 (triple) or more winners, as 2 is just oke to compare the root. 14. Corey posted: 08.15.2018 - 6:23 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) How can you accurately apply today's playoff format with results from the 50's? I would think that the two would be incompatible, especially since that every driver aside from Lee Petty would have been ineligible. There is that pesky rule of having to attempt every race. Petty's lone miss was only due to NASCAR running two races on the same day at opposite ends of the country. 18. acerogers58 posted: 11.22.2019 - 8:01 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Elmo Langley and Charley Griffith also flipped in this race. 19.
