For most of Speedweeks Junior was far off the pace, but during the final practices Junior Johnson found an advantage. He was passed by Jack Smith's faster Pontiac, but when he got in line behind Smith, he was able to hang with him. Junior used this trick to his advantage, hooking up on the rears of cars until he got to the front of the pack. Junior Johnson discovered what is known today as the draft. 7. hyltonfan08 posted: 01.23.2009 - 4:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsors: 3-Bobby Johns: Stephens Pontiac 28-Fred Lorenzen: Rupert Safety Belts 8. Lee Petty drove right under his rolling car and Junior Johnson had to go the grass to avoid it. George Green burst into flames. Roy Tyner crashed into Dick Dixon's stalled car and Tyner's rollcage appeared to have failed. Dick Freeman ended up stalled in the middle of the backstrech with cars flying past him. Johnson won the race when Bobby Johns's rear window blew out late in the race causing Johns to spin. Johnson took the lead and went on to win. 12. petty43 posted: 09.17.2010 - 9:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) nope joe weatherly figureed out the draft at daytona in 59 i know this for a fact. 13. jessie henry posted: 12.22.2010 - 11:58 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) good race 14. rob posted: 01.08.2011 - 12:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) the CBS sports spectacular showed two pole qualifying races of 25 miles each and two compact car races live a week or so before the 500. the 500 was not shown. 15. He said he was watching one of the Pettys and then all of a sudden everything got quiet. He looked around and saw all the cars piled up from the crash at the 4th corner. He remembers it like it was yesterday. I watched the video and I was shocked to see all the empty seats, times have changed. 16. jessie hennry posted: 02.09.2011 - 7:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 163.602 17. jessie henry posted: 02.21.2011 - 7:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) bad datona 500 18. rob posted: 02.24.2011 - 5:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) from the video of the race, it looked like dick dixon was driving a 1960 ford. also no petty's were in the race with the big wreck. note... so many cars were torn up in this 500 that the next two races were cancelled due to lack of entries. 19. RaceFanX posted: 04.06.2011 - 11:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Just like the previous year's 500 Fireball Roberts was fast at the start...and just like the previous year his Pontiac couldn't take the extreme conditions Daytona thrust upon it. A blown motor again put Glenn on the trailer early. Even with Fireball gone the wide track Pontiacs were the class of the field. Fireball's teammate Bobby Johns, driving the same car Fireball won at Daytona with the previous July, led late but with under 10 laps to go spun into the infield off turn 2. Junior Johnson cruised by and went on to win with his outdated Chevy as Johns lost the rear window in his #3 Pontiac in the spin and didn't have the aerodynamics to run him down. Johnson's winning car was a late entry to the 500. Johnson had not originally planned to enter the race but got the opportunity when Daytona Beach Kennel Club owner John Masoni convinced Ray Fox to build him a car to enter in the 500 to promote his greyhound racing track, which was and still is located right next door to the speedway. Fox hired Johnson to drive it and all three ended up in victory lane. Richard Petty leads the 500 for the first time, somewhat avenging his early exit the year before. Richard, refered to as "Dick Petty" by the newsreels, ended up fighting his father Lee for the lead before both Petty Plymouths settled into top-5s. 20. Matt posted: 03.14.2020 - 5:29 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Tommy Herbert had one of the most death-defying wrecks in NASCAR history in this 500. He got loose on the backstretch, and hit the guardrail, which caused his front end to hook on the broken edge of the rail and launch the car upside down. It was as if the car exploded; the engine, tires, and just about every other piece of the engine compartment went flying into the air, some pieces 100 feet up! As other cars tried to avoid Herbert's car, which was sliding down the backstretch upside-down, Pappy Crane spun into the guardrail and rolled his Chevy as well. Crane was uninjured, but Herbert certainly was, needing to be extricated from his car and taken to the hospital. Thankfully, he lived to tell the story, but one can understand why he never tried to race in NASCAR's top series again. 56.
