This race was red flagged for nearly an hour about halfway through after
a heavily deteriorating track wreaked havoc on the field, most notably
dominant early leader Jack Smith, whose oil pan was damaged goods after
contact with a piece of track debris. Lee Petty went on to win by a lap
and a half over Joe Lee Johnson, who protested that he won but
ultimately the win was given to Petty.
