Paving had been delayed during construction due to bad weather, and the racing surface was coming apart in chunks, causing damage to windshields, and in the case of Jack Smith, putting a hole in his gas tank while was running with a huge lead. Cars were allowed to run dirt track style screens to protect the radiators from debris, as officials were aware of the problem before the race started, but the race date had already been pushed back once due to the construction delays and NASCAR was determined to get it in without rescheduling again. 19. nascarman posted: 01.13.2020 - 5:38 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Some debate over whether Jimmy Massey actually drove for the Wood Brothers in his races in a Chevy. This news clipping indicates he was really a teammate to Junior Johnson, driving for John Masoni: "Drivers arriving at the track Tuesday included Daytona 500 winner Junior Johnson of Ronda NC, Tom Pistone of Chicago, Charles Wickershaw of Long Boat Key FL, and Jim Massey of Burlington, who will drive as Johnson's teammate." But that was 60 years ago. 22. possum posted: 02.19.2020 - 7:25 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @21 - the violations were entering pit road. NASCAR required that cars enter on the pavement, making a late entry across the grass (or dirt, as it actually was) was forbidden. All 6 DQs were for cutting across the dirt. 23. Either a bad batch of parts, or (perhaps more likely) a new head which didn't fit the existing gaskets well. I think 1960 was the first year for the 10.6:1 compression version of the FE engine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
