"The North Carolinian concentrates on Sportsman cars, but he can step into bigger and faster machinery when he has the opportunity. In 1961, Ralph took over as relief driver for Cotton Owens in the 1961 Daytona 500, and drove some 300 miles. He finished a fast-running fifth in Owens' Pontiac." http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=2HAQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=6IoDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6992,5553082&dq=nascar+sportsman+ralph+earnhardt&hl=en 10. Pontiac stacked the field with their new 1961 models, including Fireball's ride, making this an awkwardly joyous occasion when Panch beat them all to win the race in the old car. R.I.P. He ran well, with four top-10s in those five outings, and won Daytona qualifying races three times in his career but never won the 500. 32.
