Are you sure this was the correct name of the event? If it was scheduled
for 500 laps it would have been 250 miles. I have read somewhere else
that the name of the race was the Virginia 500, which makes more sense
but I do not claim to be a true Nascar historian.

from what i remember , the sanctioning body made a decision to count
this as an official race and add another event at martinsville to the
schedule.

It was the Virginia 500. According to Greg Fielden's book, Forty Years
of Stock Car Racing, Bill France was on hand for the race and said the
full 500 lapper would be rescheduled for April 30th (Virginia 500
Sweepstakes), but that this race would count as an official 100 mile
race. It was the first time that the second place finisher made more
money than the winner.

The rain-shortened event was counted as an official race because Big
Bill France SAID it was an official race. Guess that's all that had to
be said.

Here is a news article from the Fredericksbug, VA Free Lance-Star about
the race and the howls from Darlington's Bob Colvin about France's decision.

Note: Position 1 to 20 by qualifying time. Position 21 to 26 were
determined in a 20-lap qualifying race. Position 27 was an additional
starter selected by the promoter of the race.
Due to lack of entries (with 4 'last minute' withdraw), only 6 cars were
ready to go at the start of the 20-lap qualifying race, and the race was
cut to only 10 laps. Harry Leake (27th starter) was a late entry and
received a wild card by the promoter. Race officials expect between 30
and 32 cars to start in the Virginia 500â?¦
