The old Charlotte Fairgrounds track was becoming an airport when Richard Petty started racing in 1959. 10. It was in February of 1960 at the Southern States Fairgrounds at Sugar Creek Road and Tryon, nowhere near the airport. You should have looked it up right here on this website. 13. ericthenau posted: 10.14.2012 - 5:42 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) This race began a streak of 1856 consecutive races where at least one of the drivers in the race was from North Carolina. The streak would come to an end after Dale Earnhardt, Jr. did not race in the 2012 Bank of America 500 at Charlotte after getting a concussion after the previous race at Talladega; Scott Riggs failed to qualify for that same race, and Mark Martin raced in Michael Waltrip's #55 Aaron's Dream Machine Toyota instead of Brian Vickers for that same race. 14. rob posted: 02.08.2013 - 11:40 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) ironic that the streak came to an end at a north carolina track. how come 55 cars in the 600 , but only 19 in each qualifier ? 15. Ralph Earnhardt's sponsor was Hedge's Pontiac, Banjo Matthews sponsor was Warrior Motel. 16. gary24fan posted: 11.07.2018 - 5:45 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Some sponsor updates, based on the aforementioned Economaki-narrated documentary which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyTTwg2Sl0g 93 Lee Reitzel Pressley's Garage & Paint Shop 9 Roy Tyner Joe's Grill 20 Marvin Panch Gillman Pontiac 21 Curtis Turner Courtesy Ford 89 Joe Lee Johnson Adcox Chevrolet Also at around the 51-second mark of the video is a brief but clear shot of Marvin Porter's #44. Very obvious it's a Petty Enterprises car. 17. Greg9Fan posted: 03.02.2019 - 11:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I love looking back at comments and results from these old races. The attrition back then was just ridiculous. Sometimes half the field is out with mechanical issues. Compare that to today when an engine blowing is rare. 18.
