First Grand National race I ever attended. A brash young kid named David
Pearson tried to take the lead from fourth place in turn 4 on the first
lap and caused a huge crash. One car was so stuck on the inside
guardrail that they turned a wrecker over trying to get it unstuck. I
think this was Lorenzen's first major win in NASCAR, he went on to win a
lot of races at Atlanta until his first retirement.

This race was originally supposed to be run for USAC Championship Cars,
but USAC withdrew their sanction of it at the last minute due to the
Championship Cars having problems with the track. So NASCAR jumped to
the speedway's aid.

Under caution after the first lap accident, a tow truck flipped while
trying to tow away the car of Herb Tillman. The truck came to stop on
its door, but driver Robert Higgenbottom was fine.
