Banjo Matthews inherited the lead and blew up leading. Fireball Roberts took the lead and ran out of gas with two laps to go. Junior Johnson(In reality Bunkie Blackburn, driving in relief of Junior) took the lead, but ran out of gas on the white flag lap. David Pearson passed Blackburn in the last turn, but originally Blackburn was flagged the winner, which would have given the win to Johnson. Pearson claimed that he had won the race, which he had. It was his third win of the 1961 season, in which he won the World 600 and the Firecracker 250, which gave The Silver Fox his first nickname, David the Giant Killer. 2. Last start for Jesse James Taylor, the same one that finished 2nd in the '51 Southern 500, and then was critically injured at Lakewood that year. 3. rob posted: 05.09.2013 - 7:45 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) From what I remember there were lap deficits between the top cars once Banjo dropped out. That forced the flagman to throw the white flag multiple times. 4. Dave Mader was not so fortunate in trying to avoid Lorenzen. His car spun into a steel guardrail, knocking him unconscious. Mader was given emergency treatment and then taken to an Atlanta hospital for observation. Fortunately he was not seriously hurt. 7.
