Officials: Why didn't you finish the race?

Doug Yates: THERE'S SEALS IN THE CAR!!!

@5 - not a good excuse. If Fonty Flock could race with a monkey, then
Yates should have been able to race with seals.

@7 Except seals are big mofo's and could impede the driver. The monkey
Flock had in his car was small

Seems a little odd that Pontiac racked up 30 wins in the 52 races run in
the '61 season, yet did not win the manufacturer's championship, which
was taken by the 11 win Chevy brigade.

@9 - It does seem odd, though the point systems NASCAR used back then
were odd themselves. After all, Ned Jarrett won the 1961 championship
while runner-up Rex White had a far better season in every statistical
category.

After looking over the 1961 season, though, here is my theory: In
general, Chevy drivers ran more races. The top 3 drivers in starts for
the 1961 season primarily drove Chevys. Among the 9 drivers who had more
than 32 starts, only 1 drove Pontiacs. Joe Weatherly won 8 races for
Pontiac, but started less than half the races.

@9 - agreed, it looks odd. I have no idea what NASCAR's manufacturer
points looked like then, but if it was anything like the modern system,
points were awarded based on the highest finishing car of each brand. So
if the finishing order was Pontiac, Pontiac, Pontiac, Chevy, Pontiac,
Chevy, Ford, Plymouth then Pontiac got first place points, Chevy second,
Ford third and Plymouth fourth. If Chevy had a lot of good finishes in
races they didn't win, and Pontiac either won or sucked, then Chevy
could out-point them.

Rex White and Ned Jarrett had similar stats if you count races equally.
Of course they didn't do that until 1975. There was a severe difference
between the average short track, which was usually worth 400 points, and
the 600, which was worth 4,000. Daytona 500 and Southern 500 were 3,000.

I took all the speedway races and added up the scores - they're posted
online elsewhere - and in those races, Ned was 2,256 points up on Rex.
He won the championship by 830.

This manufacturer's championship is really confusing. No idea how they
scored it. Pontiac won all the big money races.
