Petty claimed he had photographic proof but did not produce any pictures. When NASCAR was given photos from a local newspaper, they showed only 6 crew members. Petty admitted he filed the protest after hearing rumors and insisted he wanted the $100 protest fee back. 18. Remember any footage of the Daytona 500 from 1959 to the early/mid 1960's is mostly newsreel footage and a handful of home movie footage and often the newsreel footage edited with some things omitted and some things added in (sometimes splicing in footage from the qualifying races and consolation races). 24. Pat Fahey posted: 02.19.2018 - 7:31 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Fireball Roberts was my childhood hero. I cried for days when he passed away. I was full of hope that he was going to survive, but he died several weeks later from pneumonia from a weakened immune system as a result of his severe burns. His 1962 Daytona 500 average speed of 152.826 mph stood for more than a decade, not bested until the late 70's. He ran what Richard Petty called "the perfect race". 27.
