New Asheville Speedway hosts the first of its eight Cup races. The track
remained an annual stop for the NASCAR Grand National series through 1968.

Sherman Utsman records the only sixth-place finish of his Cup career.

The late, and controversial, Jack Smith records his 21st and final Cup
victory.
