Hold on, how can Petty win the race by leading only one lap when second
place finished three laps behind? If Jack Smith had been leading the
race but then encountered a problem after completing 197 laps, wouldn't
Petty have at some point then passed him and led the final three laps?
Someone correct me.

Since lap leader data is not available for this race, all we know for
sure is that Petty led the final lap. As you noted, he very likely led
more than just 1 lap for the entire race.

@webmaster, since he won by 3 laps, wouldn't it be safe to assume he had
to lead at least 3 laps?
