Also the only Grand National/Winston Cup/Nextel Cup win for a car numbered 66. 2. Matt posted: 01.10.2007 - 7:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Johnny Allen had an awful crash in this race. His car flipped in turn 2 and slid on its side and roof until the backstretch before catching fire. Allen was unhurt in the crash. 3. It was retrieved from an old kinescope. 4. RaceFanX posted: 01.03.2008 - 7:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Heard this in a stock car racing magazine... Do to a scoring error, Junior Johnson was originally flagged as the winner of this race. Johnson went to victory lane and was interviewed afterward, apparently stating that he planned to use the winning to build a few more chicken coops on his farm. That didn't happen once scoring was corrected and Frank given the victory. The article also stated that Larry Frank supposedly lost a wheel and crashed into the inside wall coming across the finish line of his only win but I can't verify that as I have never seen any video from it. 5. If it was called the 13th Southern 500, history would be so much different... In Greg Fielden's NASCAR: The Complete History, it shows a picture of Larry Frank the day after the race. 8. The car had "Jack" written on the roof, but Earnhardt drove the race and was involved in a spin entering turn one. 10. Dieringer's gas tank ruptured and caught fire as the driver fought for control and Bunkie Blackburn (#41)gets into the rail to miss the trouble. The car finally stops and the dazed Dieringer hits the escape hatch. 16. (Very befitting of that '12th Renewal Southern 500' comment) This hasn't occurred on back-to-back years in the events history before or since. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
