Nice race name, minus an exception in 2001 NASCAR never runs this late
in the year now

This was in 1962 but was the 3rd race of the 1963 season. Numerous times
the season began in November or December providing a short, or no
off-season.

The NASCAR Cup Series visits Tar Heel Speedway in Randleman, North
Carolina, just down the road from the Petty family homestead, for the
first time with a Thanksgiving Day 1962 Showdown. While the focus may
have been on the Pettys it was another fast family in control for much
of the race as Glen Wood dominated in the Wood Brothers entry until the
famous #21 Ford blew an engine. With wood on the sidelines Jim Paschal
and his hometown Petty Enterprise Plymouth sped to victory.

Richard Petty's first home race didn't go well as the future King fell
out with a transmission failure. Still it was a great day for the family
as in addition to Paschal's win Richard's mechanic brother Maurice
Petty, racing with Lee's famous #42, turned in a top-5 run.

Kind of odd that this race was run in 1962, but was part of the 1963
season. They used to do that quite a bit, though. This counts as 1 of
Paschal's 5 wins in 1963, rather than a 5th from 1962.

According to Bill France, we were supposed to be racing at Hillsboro on
the 18th. Anyone know what happened to that?
