pretty certain red foote was driving #84 , not 34. wendell scott ran 34
in the other qualifier.

Little 500 winner Dick Good's NASCAR debut nets him a top-10. This race
and the following Daytona 500 were his only ones in Cup.

The 1963 Daytona events came on the heels of GM's announcement that they
were not officially supporting racing (which actually was reinstating
the 1957 AMA policy). Over the course of the season performance of the
Chevy and Pontiac teams would drop off, spare parts would be in short
supply, and big name drivers and teams would jump to Ford or Mopar for
1964.

Even with the reduced backing, Johnson won two superspeedway races and
five races on short tracks. Also Weatherly won one superspeedway race
and one on dirt.

Note: Larry Frank was running second going into the last lap when he was
nudged from the rear by G.C. Spencer. Frank's car spun out, looped
dizzily into the infield grass, bounced 10 feet up in the air and landed
on all four wheels. He was credited with a fourth place finish. NASCAR
field manager John Bruner, chief steward at Daytona, announced Spencer
was penalized two laps for ignoring the black flag when his car was
detected spilling gas on the track. Spencer's Chevrolet was scraped by
another car during the race, and the gas cap was knocked cockeyed. There
was red paint on the cap, off the other car. On the last lap, the flat
out Spencer shot from fifth place to second.

Paul Clark went over the infield wall in his crash. The car did not
overturn.

The mystery motor lays a smack down in the qualifying races but couldn't
go 500 miles - leaving Ford to dominate most of the race. Prompting
MOPAR to develop the 426 Hemi for 1964.
