Johns had bee contending for the lead when that happened. Also, Larry Frank was penalized for a pit infraction, as he had pulled into the wrong pit during an early pit stop before finding the correct pit. A lot of people don't realize this, but the weather played a critical role in Tiny Lund winning this race. Lund won by making only four pit stops, but he would not have been able to make the distance on four pit stops had the first 10 laps not been run under caution to dry the track from earlier rains. Had the race not started under caution, Lund would have had to make five pit stops, just as Fred Lorenzen and Ned Jarrett did, but because of the slow start, he was able to make it on just four pit stops. Another thing that made this race so competitive was the fact that, for the first time, USAC allowed it's drivers to compete in the Daytona 500, which meant star drivers such as Indianapolis 500 winners A.J. Foyt, Troy Ruttman, Rodger Ward, and the rest of the USAC drivers were able to compete, resulting in a 66-car entry list, meaning 16 cars would not qualify, including those driven by Ward and 2-time NASCAR champion Buck Baker. Parnelli Jones and Dan Gurney had competed in the Daytona 500 before joining USAC. In fact, Parnelli had driven in NASCAR races as far back as the mid 50s, including the Southern 500 at Darlington three times (1956-'58). 18. Why is Bobby Johns credited with leading these laps. He started in spot 14, Johnson and Goldsmith spots 3 and 5. Dose not make sense. Watch it on youtube. I think the stats need correcting. 19. Scott B posted: 02.03.2017 - 10:31 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) #26, First impression would be that it would have been a Buck Baker owned car, but I'd have to research who might have been driving it. Buck was the only one running Chryslers on a semi-regular basis that season (though he also mixed in Pontiacs). Jack Smith drove the #47 Chrysler in the consolation race. If he had an issue during practice that caused him to change cars, it could be him... otherwise, no. 29. Foyt's No. 02 captioned as, 'Foyt running at Daytona in Wendell Scott's 1963 Pontiac.' Has anyone else ever stumbled onto something like that? 33. Scott B posted: 11.26.2018 - 4:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The #02 was definitely a Nichels entry, that's the number they used in several races with A.J. that season and they were a Pontiac team (later switching to Mopar). Scott's cars were Chevy's at that time, later he switched to Ford, but never Pontiac. It's possible A.J. drove in relief of Wendell at some point, in theory. I don't have any evidence that was the case offhand, though. Even if that was the case, the part about the ownership of the #02 is not correct. 34. MSportRev posted: 11.26.2018 - 9:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @33 that's why I was asking. From everything I had seen, the caption didn't make sense. Could be that AJ drove in relief for Wendell in the race, since Wendell is credited with completing at least another 25 laps compared to AJ. 35. Jim4Bill posted: 04.15.2020 - 2:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ford ended up dominating the 1963 season with the newly released FE 427. Chevy teams seemed to have the best engine on power with their 427 "mystery motor" - but GM pulled factory support which ended all development of the new engine and it proved not to have the reliability sorted out for the 500. Pontiac carried over the 421 SD - which while still competitive was also kneecapped by GMs mandidate to get out of racing. MOPAR was using the RB 426 wedge - which had no chance on big tracks like Daytona and lead Chrysler to roll out of the Hemi for 1964. Although the Hemi had a big advantage in 1964 - through rule wrangling and R&D work Ford was able to get the FE based 427 close to the Hemi on power (and it was significantly lighter - which mattered on the smaller tracks most NASCAR races ran on). 36.
