This race was run in two 110-lap segments and a convoluted "points"
system was used to determine the finishing order.

Joe Weatherly won the first segment and the most overall "points", while
Richard Petty won the second segment.

junior johnson was leading the first segment when his rear end went on
the last lap of the segment.

heard darrell waltrip comment that he would like to see a standing start
in a cup race ( after watching the start of the bathurst 1000 that he
covered for speed ). well they had one for the second segment of this
event. petty shot into the lead and was never headed. weatherly played
it smart and finished second in the segment to get the overall victory.
under strong advisement, this format was never used again.

Anonymous: No. The concept of seperate owner points didn't come along
until '54.

I think NASCAR had a 30 min.time between segments and allowed teams to
change engines if they so desired. I think some teams did.

I don't recall any such thing as engine changes being allowed between
segments. Petty used the lighter weight advantage of his Plymouth to
grab the lead from the second segment standing start.

Could this be considered the first Cup series race to have stages? :v

This was just the second spring Darligton Cup race (the first being a
100 miler in 1952) run with hardtops. The other previous runnings from
1960 through '62 featured convertible cars running for Cup points.

Very odd to see the laps completed column jumping around instead of
descending to match the finishing order due to the odd race format.
