joe weatherly drove a petty car in this race. oddly he ended up beating
richard for the title later that year. this fourth place finish no doubt
helped him do it.

jarret used a slow car of major melton as a pick to take the lead from
petty with about 20 to go. petty was angry and took a swing at jarret
after the race. it was one of the few times that richard ever lost his
cool during his incredible csreer.

Correction:
Richard Petty drove the #42 car in this race

Petty drove the #42 at Bowman Gray the night before and then in this
race at Asheville. Newspaper mention and photo of Petty in 42 car:

Ned Jarrett admitted years later that he raced Richard Petty more
aggressively for the lead in this race than was normally his style, as
payback from a race at Bowman Gray the previous season where he felt
Petty wronged him.

Once tempers cooled down, Ned and Richard got along fine.
