Bud Moore, who Weatherly normally drove for, had arrived early at the track to check in, but the NASCAR official had not arrived yet. After waiting around a bit, Moore decided to go out for breakfast. When he returned to the track, many other teams had already checked in ahead of him. Normally, this would not be a problem. But when qualifying was rained out, the field was set by the order in which the teams checked in at the track. Moore was livid because he would have been first if the official had been on time to meet him, and loaded up his car and left the track (Moore was also unhappy with Weatherly, who was a late arrival as well). Abandoned by his team owner, Weatherly made a deal with Wade Younts to drive the #36 in place of Larry Thomas, in order to salvage some points in his quest for back to back championships. Weatherly and Moore made amends and reunited before the next race (and Joe did get that second championship). 3. Both White and Lund had been involved in a crash on lap 194 at Nashville one week prior (8/4/63). It would follow that those cars might not have been repaired in time for this race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
