This was also the only race (excluding the 1st Daytona 500 Qualifier) that Ned Jarrett didn't compete in in 1963. "Fatigue" as the reason for drivers retiring from races aren't that common anymore, but NASCAR races from decades ago did have its share of "fatigue" retirements. I wonder if Junior Johnson was becoming sick as the race went on, lost the lead after leading 101 of the first 113 laps, and then retired from the race due to his fatigue knowing that he didn't have a shot at the win anymore. Given the fact that Johnson and Ray Fox weren't running for the championship, I think that's a possibility for his retirement. 4. Massey used that car the entire season. Previous races he was incorrectly listed as driving a 1962 model. 6.
