Foyt and Dan Gurney skipped the race. Paul Goldsmith was the only USAC driver who competed, and he was suspended a year by USAC. Goldsmith took it to court. While losing the case, Goldsmith's lawsuit forced racing associations to allow driver interchange to avoid further legal action. 4. He still brought his Wood Brothers Ford in for a 2nd place finish. He was a heck of a driver. I didn't know Petty jumped in Johnson's car and drove it to the finish, interesting. Results show Johnson 5th & Petty 36th 9. Fred Lorenzen only ran just over half the races, focusing on the super speedways, and finished third in points by a good margin over Ned Jarrett, who ran nearly all of them. Lorenzen had a pretty good run going early in this one as led 20 laps right at the start before the transmission failed in his signature #28 Ford. 32. RaceFanX posted: 04.24.2019 - 5:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Holman-Moody fielded a pair of almost identical LaFayette Ford racers in this one. Fred Lorenzen drove his normal #28 while the visiting ace Ken Miles drove a #281 that was identical minus the addition of that extra digit. Miles rolled his car during a practice crash but the team was able to repair it for the race, showing his road course skill he still almost finished in the top-10 despite that damage. Miles later died here at Riverside about two and half years later when he crashed the Ford "J-car" prototype. Ken Miles was a test driver for Carroll Shelby and he wasn't the only Shelby-connected competitor in this race as Pete Brock, the designer of the iconic Shelby Daytona Coupe, made his only NASCAR Cup start and brought home the #211 Kraco Safety Belts Mercury with a top-20 despite being sidelined by fuel problems. 33. thecautionlightnews posted: 09.23.2020 - 11:31 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ken Miles, the legendary sports car racer and buisness partner of Carroll Shelby races in his one and only NASCAR race.
